Moving waters - the changing state of rivers
Managing our rivers has revolved around altering the movement of water – obviously through dams, extraction for irrigation, mining, water supplies, industry and water transfers and more cryptically when we consider groundwater use, virtual water, water sensitive urban design, water recycling and adjustments to environmental flows. The 2010 program will focus on 6 key areas demonstrated on the right. The program for the 13th International Riversymposium is colour coded to match these 6 key areas. River Dialogue Workshops | Lunchtime, Monday 11 October - Wednesday 13 October These interactive sessions will allow participants to discuss successes, challenges and problem solve real case studies. Participants will have an opportunity to share knowledge, network, ask questions and learn from experts.
FREE Evapotranspiration Workshop | 5.30pm - 8.00pm, Wednesday 13 October The National Water Commission has funded a number of studies into the use of remote sensing of evapotranspiration (ET) and offers this workshop on the findings and benefits of remote sensing ET. Click here for further details including registration form. Optional Study Tours will be featured within the Riversymposium program on Tuesday 12 October. There is no additional cost associated with the Study Tours for registered delegates and they are run alongside concurrent sessions. Numbers are strictly limited and delegates must indicate their intent to participate at the time of registration. 1 . River Restoration Study Tour - Swan Canning Riverpark ALLOCATION EXHAUSTED The Swan Canning Riverpark Study Tour will begin with a morning cruise travelling upstream on the iconic Swan River. Delegates will be presented with talks on local riverine issues and be shown foreshore restoration sites, water quality improvement and intervention approaches to river management. The unique opportunity to take part in Perth’s Dolphin Watch project and contribute to the science around the river’s resident bottlenose dolphin community will also be available. The cruise will end in the Swan Valley at Sandalford Winery where presentations will be delivered on legislative change and joint management arrangements through the River Protection Strategy, river science supporting management, climate change and implications for the Swan Canning Riverpark and the changing face of community involvement in river management. Delegates will then be transported to Wharf Street in the City of Canning, where a constructed filtration wetland tour will demonstrate effective intervention methodologies. After the wetland tour, delegates will have the opportunity to view constructed wetlands, community restoration work and proximity of infrastructure to the Swan River on their return to the Burswood Entertainment Complex. Presented by the Swan River Trust At lunchtime, delegates will be taken by bus to visit a facility for rearing endangered fish species. This visit will complement the feature session on preventing fresh water extinctions that will be run between morning tea and lunch on this day. Fisheries experts will guide the group on the facility and the current research being conducted. The facility is run by The University of Western Australia and West Australian Department of Fisheries. Presented by West Australian Department of Fisheries and The University of Western Australia
